Leader’s Introduction

Jeff Reid, leader of Northumberland County Council:

Jeff ReidAll councils across the country now have to think about how they can provide services in new and different ways.

As a new authority, Northumberland is facing up to these challenges and we are looking for people to join us at this exciting time to help meet our goals and maintain a high level of service in the years to come.

Covering such a vast geographical area, our councillors and officers are used to tailoring the services they provide to ensure that residents in the rural and urban centres of the county benefit from the same high standards wherever they live.

The majority of our staff live in Northumberland, and the county's popularity is growing year on year as more people discover what it can offer to those seeking a better quality of life.

For our next stage of development we need to introduce new leadership to the organisation to help breathe new life into our work. We're looking for professionals who can focus on performance, understand budget management, can balance risk and take people with them.

Partnership working and new thinking around public services are not just necessary - they are vital and those with experience of working across all sectors will be especially welcomed.

Our success in this year's national Local Government Innovation Awards, where we won four awards - the highest number of any council in the country - is an amazing achievement in what is still the first full year of our existence.

These four awards are a great recognition of what we do as a council but ultimately these projects are more about the communities and people that they help.

This success has enabled us to access around £1.2m of funding that we can now re-invest into council services for people across Northumberland.

The areas where we were successful were especially pleasing because they are at the centre of modern community life - keeping children safe, caring for vulnerable people, strengthening families and achieving more through partnership.

As well as these rewards, working for us will present some unique challenges. We need talented people managers who are used to working in the difficult political environment of a hung council.

You will of course be aware that the financial climate for local government is going to be extremely difficult over the next few years. You will therefore need to be creative, innovative and resilient as we navigate these difficult times.

The successful applicants will not only get a fantastic job they will also be helping to build a platform for Northumberland County Council to succeed well into the future.

You will truly be helping us to move from transition to transformation. I hope many of you will find this and exciting opportunity and I look forward to receiving your applications.
